Annual conference cycle with an international reach, the European Open source & Law Event (EOLE) aims at encouraging the mutualization and diffusion of legal knowledge related to free licences, as well as the development and promotion of good practices. Initiative born in 2008 from users’ needs, EOLE has for objective to develop a legal doctrine dedicated to the open source, with a particular attention to the delivery of neutral and quality information.
The use of free and open source software presents a large number of advantages for organizations : independance from traditional publishers, adaptability, sustainability, etc. For the past few years, its adoption was accelerated because of its growing strategic nature and market pressure. In the digital age, free software become a true business differentiator, and not taking advantage of it to strengthen professions is a real risk for hesitant or refractory organizations.
As a consequence, many actors gradually establish good practices relying on international strandardization processes, deployment of specific tools, or the design of standards. These good practices enable the organization to respect licences, but above all to fully benefit from free and open source software by focusing on its own added-value.
In this context, increasingly integrated in industrial processes of open source user and producer organizations, the conformity management has now acquired a strong maturity thanks to numerous international initiatives of standardization and automation. Resolutely turned towards this thematic, the edition 2018 has allowed to report the state of progress of these different works and to anticipate the next major evolution of the area.
The edition 2018 of EOLE, organized in partnership with the Paris Open Source Summit (POSS) last December, was the opportunity to present these good practices by focusing on conformance processes in a time of mainstream open source.

Cycle de conférences annuelles à rayonnement international, l’European Open Source & Free Software Law Event (EOLE) a pour ambition de favoriser la mutualisation et la diffusion de connaissances juridiques relatives aux licences ouvertes ainsi que le développement et la promotion de bonnes pratiques. Initiative née en 2008 des besoins des praticiens du domaine, EOLE a pour objectif de développer une doctrine juridique dédiée à l’open source, avec une attention particulière à la délivrance d’information neutre et de qualité.
Le recours au logiciel libre et à l'open source présente un grand nombre d’avantages pour les organisations : indépendance vis-à-vis des éditeurs traditionnels, adaptabilité, pérennité... Depuis quelques années, son adoption s'est accélérée en raison de son caractère stratégique croissant et de la pression accrue du marché. A l'ère du numérique, le logiciel libre devient un véritable différenciateur business et ne pas en tirer profit pour renforcer son métier devient un risque réel pour les organisations hésitantes, voire réfractaires.
En conséquence, tous ces acteurs mettent progressivement en place des bonnes pratiques qui s’appuient sur les processus de standardisation internationale, le déploiement d’outils spécifiques, ou encore la conception de référentiels. Ces bonnes pratiques permettront à l’organisation de respecter les licences, mais surtout de tirer pleinement profit du logiciel libre et open source en se concentrant sur sa propre valeur ajoutée.
Dans ce contexte, de plus en plus intégrée dans les processus industriels des organisations utilisatrices et productrices d'Open Source, la gestion de la conformité a aujourd'hui acquis une maturité forte grâce à un certain nombre d'initiatives internationales de standardisation et d'automatisation. Résolument tournée en ce sens, l'édition 2018 a ainsi permis de rendre compte de l'état d'avancement de ces différents chantiers et d'anticiper les prochaines grandes évolutions du domaine.
L’édition 2018 d’EOLE, organisée à l’occasion du Paris Open Source Summit en décembre dernier, aura été l’occasion de présenter ces bonnes pratiques en s’intéressant aux processus de conformité à l'heure de l'industrialisation de l'Open Source.
